Automatic Publishing Terms

Last updated: 2026-06-16 · Effective: 2026-06-16

1. Summary

  • By default, Mastheads holds every article as a draft for you to review and publish. Automatic publishing is off until you turn it on for a specific edition.
  • When you enable automatic publishing, articles are generated by AI and published to your site automatically, on a schedule, under your byline, without a human reviewing each article before it goes live.
  • You are the publisher and editor of record of everything published to your site. You accept responsibility for it, just as if you had written and published it yourself.
  • Every automatically published article carries a clear AI-generated disclosure. This disclosure is required by law and cannot be turned off while automatic publishing is enabled.
  • You can switch any edition back to review mode at any time.

This summary is for convenience only. If anything here differs from the detailed terms below, the detailed terms govern. These terms add to, and do not replace, our Terms of Service.

2. What automatic publishing does

When you enable automatic publishing for an edition, the Mastheads engine generates articles with AI and publishes them directly to the site you have connected — on your schedule, under the byline and editor of record you configured — with no mandatory human review of each article before it is made public. This is different from the default review mode, where articles are held as drafts until a person on your team approves and publishes them.

3. You are the publisher

You are the publisher and the editor of record of all content published to your site, including content published automatically. Mastheads provides the tool that generates and delivers the content; it is not the publisher of, and does not exercise editorial control over, what your edition publishes. You are solely responsible for the legality, accuracy, and appropriateness of everything published to your site, to the same extent as if you had written and published it yourself.

4. Risks you acknowledge

AI-generated content is produced by statistical models and may be inaccurate, incomplete, outdated, biased, or unsuitable for publication. Publishing without human review increases that risk because no person checks each article before it is public. By enabling automatic publishing you acknowledge and accept that risk, including the possibility that an automatically published article could:

  • contain factual errors or unverified claims;
  • be defamatory of, or infringe the privacy or publicity rights of, an identifiable person;
  • infringe a third party's copyright or trademark;
  • make misleading statements, including about health, legal, or financial matters;
  • violate the rules of the platform you publish to, or the law of a jurisdiction that applies to you or your readers.

5. AI disclosure (required, not optional)

Automatically published articles are AI-generated. Under the EU AI Act (Article 50) and comparable transparency rules, content that is generated by AI and published to inform the public must be clearly disclosed as artificially generated, and the underlying output must carry machine-readable AI provenance. Mastheads adds a clear, visible AI-generated disclosure to every automatically published article — including articles delivered to a connected WordPress or Ghost site — and embeds machine-readable AI provenance in the article markup where the destination supports it. Articles that include AI-generated images are themselves labelled as AI-generated.

This disclosure is mandatory and cannot be disabled while automatic publishing is on. The disclosure may only be omitted on an article that has undergone genuine human editorial review with a named person holding editorial responsibility — which is what review mode provides. Enabling automatic publishing does not waive this obligation.

6. Your representations

You represent and warrant that:

  • you own or are authorized to publish to the site(s) you connect, and to the inputs and configuration you provide;
  • you will use automatic publishing lawfully and in line with our Terms of Service, including the prohibited-content limits;
  • you will not use automatic publishing for content that, in your jurisdiction, requires professional review or licensing (for example regulated medical, legal, or financial guidance); and
  • you will monitor your edition and act on issues you become aware of.

7. Indemnification

You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Mastheads, its affiliates, and their officers and staff from and against any third-party claim, demand, loss, liability, fine, or expense (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of or relating to content automatically published to your site, the inputs and configuration you provide, your decision to publish without human review, or your breach of these terms or applicable law. This is in addition to the indemnity in our Terms of Service.

8. No warranty; limitation of liability

Automatic publishing and all AI-generated output are provided "as is." To the maximum extent permitted by law, Mastheads disclaims all warranties regarding the accuracy, completeness, reliability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement of AI-generated output. Our aggregate liability for any claim arising from automatic publishing is limited as set out in our Terms of Service, and we are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages.

9. Your controls

You can switch any edition back to review mode at any time from your dashboard; review mode resumes holding articles as drafts. We may also pause automatic publishing for an edition if we reasonably suspect a violation of these terms or applicable law, or if your connected site or credentials stop working. We maintain an audit trail of publishing actions and of your acceptance of these terms.

10. Changes and re-consent

We may update these terms as the service and the law evolve. If we make a material change, we will ask you to accept the updated terms before automatic publishing continues. You are bound by the version you accepted, and we keep a record of which version you accepted and when.
